The laundry
The laundry from the collection points in the four pavilions and from the disinfection building was received here. In a large laundry room, it was first soaked and then boiled in four electrically operated steam washing and rinsing machines for around 30 minutes and then rinsed with cold water. The laundry was then dried in centrifugal drying machines and smoothed in a large steam ironer.
With the abolition of the strict gender segregation, also in relation to the trades existing in the sanatoriums, and in connection with the construction of the surgery in quadrant A, the building underwent its first functional conversion as a research & teaching facility. Among others, the surgical luminaries Ferdinand Sauerbruch and August Bier worked here. Today, the building still has furniture from its time as a laboratory – including in the lecture hall.
Some young trees are growing on the roof, which was damaged by material theft. The cellar rooms, which have already been repaired, and parts of the historic supply corridor are currently being included in guided tours, as are some of the interior rooms. Due to its proximity to the future Welcome Center, the building will have a central function in visitor care – the historic lecture hall will also be resurrected as an information and event room. Preparations for the revitalization of this building are also progressing.
